Congratulations to our North Queensland team who won the Horticulture Award at The Weekly Times Farmer of the Year Awards.

Jamie and Melita Jurgens of VJK Produce were in Melbourne for the awards, which seek to recognise agriculture’s ‘best and brightest’.

The Weekly Times editor James Wagstaff said hundreds of nominations were received for this year’s awards, with judging centred on the three pillars of productivity, innovation and sustainability.

“These awards are about celebrating those who too often shy away from recognition but who play a huge role in feeding and clothing the world,” he said.

Jamie and Melita Jurgens say the win was ‘humbling’.

“This was a win for our passionate and dedicated team and recognition of everyone in our team in North Queensland and the Scenic Rim, who helps to successfully nurture the crops from paddock to plate.

“It takes a great team effort to be awarded this recognition and we extend this award to everyone who contributes in all enterprises and sites to ensure we can deliver our products from the paddock to our customers.”

Kalfresh CEO Richard Gorman says the North Queensland partnership between Kalfresh and the Jurgens family has been mutually beneficial and has strengthened both the Bowen and Scenic Rim businesses.

“Through this relationship, and thanks to hardwork and dedication of Jamie, Melita, Jess and their entire team, we have established ourselves as leaders in the certified organic fresh category,” he says.

“Through this partnership we provide customers a reliable, consistent year-round supply option for many conventional and organic lines, which means job security for many people in Bowen and at Kalbar.

“Congratulations and thank you to the Jurgens family and to everyone who plays a part in the success of the VJK partnership.”
